I don’t even want to see a leaper right now...the S-Type has started to be the PITA I knew it would be.

It blew a coolant hose while my mother was driving it back from taking care of my cousin’s kids in Raleigh. More specifically it split an intercooler line. Dad got it fixed (at Firestone, the idiot) where they told him that most of the hoses in the engine bay looked like they were about to do so too. Which is all fine, but my dad took the car to pick up some wiper blades from our indie British mechanic and he said that Jaguar was tweaking the 4.2 SC pretty much for the entire life-cycle of the engine, and that some hoses are pretty hard to source because they are effectively “limited production” just based on where your VIN falls in the production timeline.

Now, the Vanden Plas has all its original hoses and they’re fine. My Daimler-Chrysler Mercedes has most of its original hoses, it leaks from seals. This S-Type R, which was owned by a friend of ours who is absolutely fanatical about his vehicle maintenance and gets everything done on schedule on time or early, blows a coolant line and has more to follow apparently. So, annoying.

What isn’t annoying is that I bought my navigation service update and v 15.0 map disks on ebay today! And I treated myself to a CD set of MB service manuals!

How much were they if you don’t mind me asking? I started my car today fearing an ABC malfunction and it was fine ! I drove it for the first time in 2 months and it was glorious.

$15 for the NAV service update disk, and $30 for the map disk.

Obviously, they’re probably booklegs made from .iso files, but only like 3 people out of a lot more said they didn’t work. Shop manuals were $15, for gits and shiggles.

Hmm. I’d never use them but it’s not a terrible idea. Is it wrong that I’m trying to find a handset for the car phone?

Forget the stupid StarTac, theres a bluetooth module that plugs into the existing cradle isn’t there?

Well yeah, but I need that sweet Motorola handset for authenticity.

Buy a naturally aspirated X350 XJ and you will generally be fine. Air suspension parts from reputable rebuilders are cheap, the 6-speed auto is far more reliable than the 5 speed ever was, and the quality of the interior materials is noticeably better than any other Jag down-line. That is to say, go big or go home. The S-Type and X-Type may not be as unreliable as people say, but they are still disappointing as Jaguars . All I know is our 2004 and 2005 Vanden Plas’ have been repair free. Preventative maintenance yes, major repairs no. We bought an S-Type R from a family friend who is obsessive about maintenance, and an intercooler coolant line blew in less than a month.

You may think a supercharged model will be cool, but I just learned from my mechanic that they were screwing with the engine design FOR THE LIFE OF THE ENGINE. So you have to source VIN specific parts for YOUR SPECIFIC iteration of the 4.2 S/C and that apparently can be difficult.
